Meet the Garmin Instinct

Garmin International recently announced Instinct — a rugged, durable GPS smartwatch built for outdoor adventure. Featuring a 3-axis compass, barometric altimeter, multiple global navigation systems (GPS, GLONASS, Galileo), and wrist-based heart rate monitoring, the Instinct is designed for reliability in the wild. It also includes built-in sports apps, smart notifications, and wellness tracking.

“We are thrilled to add Instinct to our adventure watch line-up — an approachable smartwatch that is rugged and reliable,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin’s vice president of global consumer sales. “Instinct is perfect for those who spend their time outdoors and demand a device tough enough to stand up to the elements.”

The Instinct is built to military standards (MIL-STD-810G) for thermal, shock, and water resistance (rated to 100 metres). Its fibre-reinforced polymer case and chemically strengthened, scratch-resistant display are designed for extreme durability and visibility in bright sunlight. The fully vented silicone bands include dual keeper loops for a secure, comfortable fit.

Featuring GPS, GLONASS, and Galileo support, the Instinct ensures precise tracking even in challenging environments. With the Garmin Explore™ app, users can plan trips in advance, and the TracBack® feature helps navigate safely back to the starting point.

Using wrist-based heart rate monitoring, Instinct tracks activity, stress, sleep, and overall wellness. It records steps, distance, calories, and supports multiple sports modes including hiking, running, cycling, swimming, kayaking, and skiing. Stress tracking via heart rate variability helps users identify physical and emotional triggers throughout the day.

Paired with a compatible smartphone, the Instinct delivers smart notifications — including texts, emails, and alerts — directly to the wrist. Syncing with Garmin Connect™ allows users to analyse workouts, sleep cycles (light, deep, and REM), and even participate in online challenges.

The Instinct boasts up to 14 days of battery life in smartwatch mode, 16 hours in GPS mode, and 40 hours in UltraTrac™ power saver mode. It’s available in Graphite, Tundra, and Flame Red, retailing at R6199.
