Mountain rescues in the Drakensberg

Technical and high-altitude rescues in the Drakensberg are conducted under a joint protocol between the Mountain Club of South Africa, KZN Wildlife, and the provincial Department of Health. The Mountain Club forms the backbone of all technical rescues.

Most rescues are supported by helicopters from the South African Air Force and, in some cases, by private helicopters or the SAPS Airwing. Non-technical rescues are often handled by the local ranger-in-charge, using stretcher parties or horses. In the case of a missing hiker or a confirmed fatality, operations are conducted under the authority of the South African Police Service.

What to do in an emergency

If an emergency occurs in the Drakensberg, first try to contact the nearest ranger’s office — either by cellphone or in person. If that’s not possible, phone 0800 00 5133 and report that a “mountain rescue” is required. The operator will then contact a Mountain Club Rescue Organiser and initiate the rescue procedure.

In remote areas, response times can be lengthy. In incidents near civilisation, assistance may arrive within an hour. When a helicopter is required, expect a delay of two hours or more — especially in poor weather, when rescue teams may have to drive to the mountains and hike to the scene.

When reporting an emergency

  • Stay in cellphone range or near the landline used to make the call.
  • Give your name and phone number.
  • Provide the exact location, including coordinates and a clear verbal description.
  • Provide the patient’s name, age and gender.
  • Describe the symptoms or nature of the problem.
  • Report current weather conditions.
  • Describe the surrounding terrain.

Don’t do the following!

  • Do not report the incident to multiple agencies — this causes confusion and delays.
  • Do not allow multiple party members to make duplicate reports.
  • Do not request help from private medical companies.
  • Do not move from your current location.
