Green Mountain Trail

The Green Mountain Trail is a four-day, luxury slackpacking experience around the Green Mountain (Groendlandberg) in the Overberg region of the Western Cape.

The Trail Experience

Different from the traditional multi-day hiking setup where one day follows directly after the next, the Green Mountain Trail consists of carefully selected day hikes that showcase the diverse landscapes of the Overberg.

Our lead guide, Jeff Groenewald, was a walking encyclopaedia on fynbos and the history of the Overberg — from identifying tiny wax twiners to pointing out ancient stone tools along the trail.

From endemic plants unique to the region to fynbos found only on certain slopes, this hike reveals the intricate natural wonders that make up this extraordinary ecosystem.

While the term “slackpacking” might sound leisurely, the Green Mountain Trail offers a true mountain experience with steady ascents and descents, rugged paths and rewarding summit views. The longer days cover 18–23 km, but the beauty is — no heavy backpacks required!

Even hikers with physical limitations can enjoy the full experience — guides carry coffee and snacks, leaving you free to focus on the scenery and light daypacks. Expect changing mountain weather — from blue skies to misty ridges — all part of the adventure.

The area teems with wildlife — from sugarbirds and sunbirds to klipspringers and duikers. We spotted a pair of African harrier hawks and even a beautifully camouflaged Cape dwarf chameleon, which held everyone’s attention for ages.
