Technical rating of trail: Standard trail walking, with short sections of steep inclines and declines and a few ladders.

The High Five Hiking Trail, previously the Num-Num Hiking Trail, is a 2–5 day hiking trail which can be tailored according to your needs and availability as it centres around four overnight camps/huts, each with circular day routes around them.

One can hike from hut to hut or use a hut as a base camp to enjoy several circular and varied day routes. Slackpacking options are also available and incredibly convenient.

The trail is situated close to Machadodorp in Mpumalanga and is incredibly diverse — each overnight camp has its own distinct beauty.

Day 1: Pongola Express to Aloe Kaya Camp (+-7km)

We arrived early in the morning at Pongola Express Camp, which is actually an old train where one sleeps in the train rooms and can even eat in the dining carriage. However, we had booked this ‘camp’ for the last night, so we began hiking immediately to what would be our first night’s accommodation.

The trail begins by crossing the road that brought us to this remote area and we immediately began ascending the gorgeous Skurweberg mountains. The trail undulates and zigzags through the mountainside while endless views can be seen in the distance.

In between, we entered patches of forest and ultimately ascended to the top of the escarpment where we were surrounded by giant rock and sandstone formations. These were absolutely stunning and made for an adventurous final stretch as we jumped above, crawled below and squeezed through rock passages to continue along the trail.

Shortly thereafter we arrived at Aloe Kaya Camp. It is situated amongst the sandstone rocks, surrounded by aloes, and makes for an incredibly unique experience. Not only are the rooms built around the rocks, but so are the showers and bathrooms. There is also an incredible view of the valley below, with two open toilets offering a true ‘loo with a view’. This camp has electricity, a fridge and hot showers — always welcome!

Since we arrived early, we explored the sandstone formations and came across a beautiful dam just 10 minutes from camp — the perfect spot for a well-deserved cuppa before starting a fire and settling in for the night.

Day 2: Aloe Kaya Camp to Mount Komati Camp (+-8km)

Day 2 began by passing the dam and then ascending to wide open spaces atop the escarpment. As we walked, a group of about 30 wildebeest ran into the distance. Soon we found ourselves weaving through another maze of impressive sandstone formations.

We emerged at the edge of a canyon and followed streams through lush forest filled with small waterfalls, where we refilled our bottles with crystal-clear water. Exiting the forest, we passed a vulture lookout perched against the cliffs — the perfect lunch spot.

The trail then descended into semi-arid terrain before reaching a lush stream that guided us to Mount Komati Camp. This camp features a large lounge with couches facing a panoramic mountain view — ideal for afternoon relaxation.

Day 3: Mount Komati Camp to Candlewood Camp (+-9km)

This was the toughest but most rewarding day. We started with a steep 4.5km climb over rocky terrain, spotting blesbok, zebra and wildebeest along the way. At the top, we were rewarded with breathtaking 360° views and glimpses of the magnificent Uitkomst Falls — the second highest waterfall in Mpumalanga.

After traversing the escarpment, the trail descended through dense forest filled with waterfalls before reaching Candlewood Camp, perched dramatically on the edge of the escarpment with spectacular views and the sound of the falls echoing below. The camp features a donkey boiler, USB ports and simple but comfortable facilities.

Day 4: Candlewood Camp to Pongola Express Camp (+-7km)

We woke to golden rays lighting up Uitkomst Falls — an unforgettable sight. The day’s route passed through rock gardens and open plains dotted with aloes, wildebeest, and zebra before descending into lush forest and streams teeming with birdlife, including an inquisitive Knysna loerie that lingered long enough for photos.

The trail climbed steeply out of the forest, eventually revealing the Pongola Express Camp below — a converted train with sleeping and dining carriages, hot showers, a communal kitchen and braai area. A charming and nostalgic end to the hike.

Day 5: Pongola Express Camp Circular (+-8km)

The final day offered a circular route exploring the forest below Pongola Express, with small cascades and two magnificent waterfalls — Maningi Falls and Mac Falls — providing the perfect finale to a diverse and rewarding hike.

Conclusion

The High Five Trail is stunning in its scenery, diversity and tranquillity. The daily distances are short but challenging enough to satisfy both beginner and experienced hikers. With optional circular routes from each camp, you can choose to rest or explore further, making this a highly flexible and rewarding trail experience.
