Jonkershoek Panorama Circuit

Jonkershoek Nature Reserve is a hiker’s paradise, offering a variety of trails including the ever-popular Tweede Waterval walk. But the true crown jewel is the Panorama Circuit — a brilliantly laid out, varied trail that lives up to its name with jaw-dropping views around every corner.

Beauty: 5/5
Difficulty (fitness): 8/10
Technical Rating: On-trail walking with steep ascents and descents and some loose, rough terrain underfoot.
Distance: Indicated as 17 km, but GPS measurements are closer to 14 km over 6.5 hours.

The circuit can be completed in either direction, starting and ending at the hairpin bend on the circular drive through the valley. We found it easier to climb toward Kurktrekkernek first rather than heading to Bergriviernek.

The trail begins on the same route as the Tweede Waterval walk, gently following the Eerste River before ascending steeply to the waterfall turnoff.

Just before Tweede Waterval, the trail veers left and begins the steep, unrelenting climb to Kurktrekkernek (Corkscrew Neck). This section is eroded in places, so watch your footing on loose rocks. The reward is immediate — each pause reveals an ever-expanding view over the Jonkershoek Valley as you gain height.

At the top, several trails intersect — turn left to continue along the Panorama Circuit. The trail climbs gently through rocky outcrops, lined with vibrant Erica species and magnificent King Proteas.

The route eventually levels out over the Dwarsberg Plateau, with small marshes and streams running across the mountain saddle. The views from here are staggering — to the east lie the Hottentots Holland mountains and Franschhoek; to the west, the full sweep of the Jonkershoek Valley; and ahead, the jagged spires of Banhoek Peak, aptly nicknamed the Cathedral.

From Bergriviernek, the view down into Assegaaiboskloof is breathtaking — sheer cliffs, deep valleys, and endless layers of peaks fading into the horizon. It’s the perfect place for a snack stop before starting the descent.

The descent is long but still spectacular, offering a constant backdrop of towering peaks and deep-cut valleys. The upper sections are steep, so trekking poles are recommended if you’re prone to sore knees. Eventually, the gradient eases as you approach the valley floor, ending back at the parking area.

Conclusion

The Panorama Circuit is a truly exceptional trail — one of the Western Cape’s best. The combination of big mountain scenery, well-built paths, and varied terrain makes it a must-do for any fit hiker. Every section delivers new vistas, rewarding your effort with unforgettable views.
