Milorho Lodge Hiking Trail

Milorho Lodge Hiking Trail

We spent an unforgettable, albeit chilly, winter’s day hiking the Milorho Lodge Green Trail on the northern slopes of the Magaliesberg Mountains. The trail covers 12 km of absolute beauty, with a shorter 4 km route also available.

Distance: 12 km
Beauty: 4/5 (Definite 5 in summer)
Difficulty: 4–5/10
Technical Rating: Mostly on-trail walking with a bit of easy scrambling here and there.

This moderately difficult trail includes some boulder hopping and rock negotiating, which might be tricky for very young children, but there are no major obstacles.

Diverse terrain and ecosystems, combined with a wide range of fauna and flora, make this trail a delight for birders, botanists and nature lovers alike.

The route takes hikers through sub-tropical gorges, up mountain slopes, across rocky outcrops and level plains, and past scenic rock pools and waterfalls. Though we started on a crisp winter morning, those pools are surely irresistible in summer.

Trail markers are clear and well placed, with occasional plaques offering details about the area’s history and local flora. We were delighted to see the endangered Aloe peglerae in bloom — a rare treat in its natural habitat.

The trail was developed in 2018 by Gerhardt van Greuning (Green Flag senior auditor, HOSA board member and Ecotrail product developer). It’s a Green Flag accredited trail and is fast becoming one of the region’s most popular hiking destinations.
