New Green Flag Hiking Trail: Eingedi

Eingedi Retreat, in the scenic Eastern Free State, offers hikers a relaxed two-day base camp trail experience. Day 1 covers 11 km on the Eland Trail, while the 6 km Zebra Trail makes for a perfect follow-up on Day 2.

Eingedi Retreat trails
The Eland and Zebra Trails explore 530 hectares of game farm wilderness.

Both routes traverse a 530-hectare game farm, leading hikers up and down gentle hills and ladders, across game-filled savannahs, and through sandstone rock formations that offer panoramic views in every direction. Along the way, you’ll pass old British war forts, ruined Basotho huts, and the remnants of early villages — a fascinating mix of history and scenery.

Eingedi Retreat is ideal for a quick weekend getaway at the foothills of the Maluti Mountains.

Accommodation and Facilities

The retreat offers comfortably graded, 2-star self-catering accommodation in 11 uniquely designed units — from rustic log cabins to air-conditioned chalets. Campers are also welcome.

After a day’s walk, cool off in the large swimming pool and enjoy an evening meal around the campfire under bright Free State stars — crisp in winter and balmy in summer.
