This unexplored coastline offers pristine beaches, hidden coves, sea caves and even a labyrinth. It also gives hikers the chance to literally walk in the footsteps of the San and later Khoisan people — dating back as far as 30,000 years.

The Shoreline of the San trail lies between the Berg and Olifants rivers, beginning at Elands Bay — about a 90-minute drive from Cape Town.

This 50 km route includes overnights in Elands Bay, Lamberts Bay and Doringbaai, before ending in Strandfontein. The trail meanders through an untouched, rocky and mostly sandy coastline that few people have experienced before.

Many of the San (or Khoi) archaeological sites are found on private land and include caves, shell middens, rock art and other ancient remains that tell the story of the first people of southern Africa.
