Have you hiked a trail recently that you think other people will enjoy? We’d love to hear about it. You can now share your full trail experience with the Hiking South Africa community using our Trail Review Submission Form.
The form walks you through everything step by step, so you do not have to worry about format. You can stay anonymous or be credited as the author, and you can upload photos from the hike.
What you’ll be asked
Trail summary *
A short overview of the trail. What kind of hike is it? Forest mission, coastal route, big mountain climb, canyon walk, etc. This helps readers understand the overall vibe of the trail.
Scenery rating *
You’ll rate the scenery and can add notes: views, waterfalls, rock formations, fynbos, forest, wildlife, anything that made it special.
Difficulty rating *
You’ll rate how physically demanding the trail felt. Is it relaxed or does it require solid fitness and endurance? You can also explain why you gave that score.
Technical rating *
You’ll rate how technical the trail is. For example: simple walking, scrambling, exposure, steep ground, ladders, chains, river crossings, or any sections that need hands-on movement or careful footwork.
Number of days hiked *
Tell us if it was a single-day hike or a multi-day trail. If it’s a multi-day trail, the form will let you describe each day separately.
Day-by-day breakdown
For multi-day hikes, you’ll fill in a short section for each day. This helps future hikers plan their pace and expectations. For each day, you’ll be able to include:
- Distance covered (km) *
- Terrain and route description * – What the day was like underfoot and around you. Forest? Plateau? River valley? Coastal cliffs? Steep climbs?
- Water sources – Streams, rivers, huts with tanks, reliable refill points.
- River crossings / challenges – Waist-deep crossings, slippery boulders, strong current, etc.
- Accommodation / overnight spot – Name and feel of the hut, campsite, cave, or wild camp. Basic or comfortable? Any facilities like toilets, showers, braai spots, lapa, etc.
- Swimming spots / highlights – Pools, waterfalls, viewpoints, wildlife sightings, caves, sunrise/sunset moments.
- Your tip for the day – For example: “Start early to avoid the heat on the climb,” or “There’s shade and a swim spot at km 7, take a break there.”
This daily structure makes the final published trail review clear and practical for other hikers to follow.
Photos
You’ll be able to upload up to five photos per day. Choose the images that best show what the trail is like: scenery, camp spots, river crossings, viewpoints, and the general feel of the terrain. Strong photos help other hikers decide if the trail is for them.
Example trail info we publish
When we publish a trail review, we include quick-reference info such as:
Beauty: Your scenery score, out of 5.
Difficulty: How tough it felt, out of 5, to give an idea of fitness required.
Technical rating: How technical the route is. For example, basic walking, scrambling, ladders or chains, exposed edges, tricky river work.
Duration: How many days the trail took you and roughly how many kilometres you covered in total.
This helps readers quickly judge whether the route suits their fitness, confidence and experience level.
Community credit
